Self Publishing Never Changes… Except it Changes All the Time

by Mark Levine author of The Fine Print of Self Publishing

levineavatar

When the first edition of The Fine Print of Self-Publishing came out in 2004, it was only available as a PDF because I had no idea how to get it into a format that could be published as an actual print book. I have come a long way in the past 11 years and so has the book. I’ve learned about all aspects of book creation, and using what I learned while researching the book, I started a publishing company that has helped thousands of authors publish, distribute, market, and sell their books. The Fine Print, too, has evolved over that period of time. The sixth edition will be released in February 2016, and will have the most up to date information possible about an industry that is evolving quickly. So much has changed since that first edition, that in some ways, it is a totally new book.

Writing a book about an industry that is transforming so fast is challenging. One of the ways I’ve kept it relevant is by focusing on the concepts that never change. While self-publishing service providers come and go, some things that always remain the same are; the language in the contract terms and what it means for authors, how excessive printing markups can affect a book’s ability to compete in the marketplace, and how the royalty percentages retained by some self publishing providers take money right out an author’s pocket. While I have always covered these items in all editions of the book, I previously did so with individual detailed reviews of each publisher’s service offerings. This format was problematic because it was difficult for a reader to get a feel for how one company’s printing markups, for example, compared to that of another.

Attempting to compare all of the services in one company’s publishing package to that of another company can also be like comparing apples and oranges. Because of this, when I wrote the fifth (and currently available edition) of The Fine Print, I took out many of those details. Instead, I included comparison charts of specific aspects of major self-publishing companies so it’s obvious how they stack against each other in areas where it’s easy to compare them head-to-head. I also focused more on the information that matters most to me as an author (and hopefully to other authors) by thoroughly explaining the following items:

  • Printing Markups – given that most publishers use the exact same printer, you might like to know that some companies don’t mark up the printing at all while others mark it up in excess of 259%.
  • Royalties – for the exact same book (price, page count, binding, etc.) it’s possible that one company pays an author a royalty of $.94 while others pay $3.00 or more.
  • Return of Production Files – Some companies will return these to you for free while others won’t ever give them to you. Read my book to learn why having them matters.

Over the years, and through all editions of The Fine Print, I have noticed that what doesn’t change is how each company handles the crucial items mentioned above. Of all of the parts of the book that continually need updates based on a changing industry, printing markups, royalties, etc., have barely changed at all.

I not only try to keep The Fine Print relevant by updating information about publishers, in each edition I add new sections geared toward today’s author and market. For my upcoming edition, I decided to see how difficult (or easy) it was to submit my manuscript through some of the DIY providers like Createspace, Smashwords, and IngramSpark. I did it the same way many authors do, by just uploading a Word file and hoping for the best. The results were quite interesting to say the least. It would literally be a spoiler to give the results away, but it’ll be one of the most interesting parts of the sixth edition! So, stay tuned.

If you’re still reading this and you email at mark (at ) hillcrestmedia (dot) com with “I’d Love a Free Copy” in the subject line, I’ll mail you a copy of the fifth edition of The Fine Print for free. I have a few boxes left and I want the books to find a good home before the the sixth edition comes out. It’s like adopting a puppy, except way less work and totally different.

Dead-Jed-Cover

Dead Jed is Shaun of the Dead meets Diary of a Wimpy Kid. Jed’s not your typical junior high geek. He is, to use the politically-correct term, cardiovascularly-challenged. And while his parents have attempted to shield him from the implications of being ‘different’ for as long as they could (Jed was 8 and at a friend’s sister’s birthday party when he blew his lips off onto the cake in front of everyone, finally prompting the “Big Talk” from his parents and an emergency SuperGlue repair by his dad), 7th grade at Pine Hollow Middle School as a target of Robbie the supreme school bully and his pack of moronic toadies is rapidly becoming unbearable.

From being stuffed in a filled trash can as “dead meat” and into a trophy case as the bully’s “prize,” to literally having his hand pulled off in the boys’ room (Jed’s always losing body parts. Luckily, a good stapler and some duct tape and he’s back in the action) and a cigarette put in it and try to frame him for the recent reports of smoking in the school, Jed’s had enough and is ready to plan his revenge. Besides, it’s awesome what you can do when you’re already dead!

Dead-Jed-2-Cover

The first part of seventh grade was rough on Jed, but things are looking up now that Christmas is almost here. As with past Christmases, Jed asks for the one thing he’s always wanted–a dog–and again, his parents tell him they’re not ready. But fate has a different plan when Jed sees a dog get run over by a car. Then, it happens. Jed suddenly has a pet, Tread, a zombie dog bearing his namesake–a tire tread down his back. Jed may have gained a dog, but he loses his best friend Luke, who fears the way Jed created his undead pet.

When Jed returns to school, he finds a mysterious group called the No Zombies Now Network spreading rumors of the dangers the undead pose to normal people. Forced to disprove Hollywood stereotypes, Jed has his work cut out for him as stories of a zombie dog begin to circulate. Jed could be expelled if he can’t expose the NZN Network as a fraud. Jed needs help from his kind of girlfriend Anna, especially after he discovers Luke has joined the shadowy group.

Once again navigating the treacherous waters of middle school, Jed does his best to stay in one piece. Only this time he’ll need even more duct tape and staples than usual.

Jackie Morse Kessler grew up in Brooklyn, NY, with a cranky cat and overflowing shelves filled with dolls and books. Now she’s in Upstate NY with another cranky cat, a loving husband, two sons, and overflowing shelves filled with dragons and books (except when her sons steal her dragons). Would You Rather Questions by Donna Galanti

Would you rather never be able to speak again or always have to say everything that is on your mind?
Never have to speak again! If others knew all my crazy thoughts, I might not have any friends or family left. Ha ha! At least I could still write. J

Would you rather be able to read or be able to read minds (but be illiterate)?
Read, absolutely! To read means to explore other worlds, create movies in your mind, find deeper meaning in life, experience self-awareness, and go through transformations. I would be afraid to read minds to see truly what people are thinking. I definitely do not want to know what goes on in many people’s heads (especially my son’s)! Besides, it’s more fun to imagine what is in other people’s heads and create character stories about them to entertain myself.

Would you rather be able to speak fluently every language in the world or be the best in the world at something of your choosing?
Be the best in the world at…playing the violin! I can challenge myself to learn new languages, but I’ve always dreamed of having musical talent – and I adore the violin. Writing and music go hand in hand for me and I want to play and inspire myself, and others.

Would you rather read only one book over and over for the rest of your life or read as many as you want but never remember what they’re about?

What a terrible dilemma! As many as I want. Even if I don’t remember them, at least I can experience new worlds through them in the moment.

Would you rather only the first page of a book or the last page?
Definitely the last page! I have a habit of flicking to the back and reading the last line of a book I pick up to possibly buy. If that last line pulls me in and connects to the first line then I am good to get it!

Would you rather read 5 pages per day or 5 books per week?

5 pages per day. I am a speed reader and if I were to read 5 books a week, I know I would skim them and not get the full experience each one. To read 5 pages a day I could immerse myself in the story, slowly, and reflect on it and its journey.

Would you rather read only one genre forever or never read the same genre more than once?
I would rather never read the same genre more than once. I lost my love of reading when I became an author and couldn’t figure out why. Then a friend made me aware that as an author I now needed to expand what I read. She was right! I had always read the same one or two genres and had simply gotten bored. Now I like to sink into books that challenge me in new ways, to read things I never would have before: non-fiction, science fiction, historical, horror, etc. In reading across genres it helps me expand my skills as an author and also brings a richness to my own writing.

Would you rather be invisible or be able to read minds?
Invisible! Then I could sneak around and grab private conversations of people to churn my brain with ideas for stories! (a spy but for educational purposes, of course).

Would you rather never use the internet again or never watch TV again?
That’s easy. TV. I am not much of a TV watcher – and could always catch up on my favorite shows on the internet through Netflix.

Would you rather have one wish granted today or three granted in 10 years?
Definitely three in ten years. My desires and needs may change across the years. Something I desire today, may not work out for tomorrow!

Would you rather know it all or have it all?
Have it all. If you have it all, that’s wonderful to not worry about material things and still explore the world to seek knowledge and meaning – and know it’s a vast, never ending tide of information. But if you know it all, what left is there to discover? Life would be very boring. There would be no challenges! No amazing discoveries! No transformations! It would be a life without curiosity and that would be a very sad life indeed.

Joshua-Cover

Stay away from the window, don’t go outside when it’s storming and whatever you do, do not touch the orb.

Twelve-year-old Joshua Cooper’s grandpa has always warned him about the dangers of lightning. But Joshua never put much stock in his grandpa’s rumblings as anything more than the ravings of an old man with a vast imagination. Then one night, when Joshua and his best friend are home alone during a frightful storm, Joshua learns his grandpa was right. A bolt of lightning strikes his house and whisks away his best friend—possibly forever.

To get him back, Joshua must travel the Lightning Road to a dark place that steals children for energy. But getting back home and saving his friend won’t be easy, as Joshua must face the terrifying Child Collector and fend off ferocious and unnatural beasts intent on destroying him.

In this world, Joshua possesses powers he never knew he had, and soon, Joshua’s mission becomes more than a search for his friend. He means to send all the stolen children home—and doing so becomes the battle of his life.

Book Description:

Who is the mysterious ghosty haunting puppygirl Tillie? And why? George, the magical basset hound familiar is on the trail.

Guest Post:

Absolutely fabulous topic. Kind of weird for a dog, who doesn’t speak any one language, but it works.

When I was in college, I took a psych course that discussed this topic in regards to profanity. The problem, the instructor said, was that when a power word was used too often, it lost its power. Songs, other media, and teens have turned words that would scorch the fuzz off a peach into soft kittens that purr past our ears. The shock value they once had is gone.

Words can mimic other arts. While paintings are eye candy, a good description of a painting can be eye and mind candy. Beautiful lyrics sung by a lovely voice, sound and mind candy.

For George, the egotistical magical basset hound familiar, words aren’t as important as actions. He can speak, but he speaks with body language, not in any of the human languages. George understands his Peeps, he laments that they don’t understand him.

If George could speak to his Peeps, I’m not sure he would. He finds his power in other senses, his smelltastes, his smellhearing, anything connected to his big nose. Still, he has to communicate and he uses his body to convey what he needs and wants. There is a lot of miscommunication between him and his pack of Peeps—although there is a lot of miscommunication with words, too.

One way or the other, language is powerful. We can’t tell people our greatest fears or feats, our happiness or our sadness, our thoughts or our doubts, what we saw or what we missed, without having a way convey them.

Peeps are because we do have words, or at least languages. As I said, George doesn’t think much of words. Unless it’s TREAT TIME!

Armed with a passion for classic B-grade horror movies, a script co-written by his twin brother, and a wicked crush on his death-obsessed neighbor; hardcore horror fan Jason Nightshade must finish his student film.

But his plans are derailed when the children of suburban Silver Creek start disappearing – his twin brother among them. Battling a possessed video camera, a crazy zombie dog, a monstrous bully, and a frighteningly broken down family life, Jason embarks on a mission to find his lost brother so the two can write an ending for his story.

As any horror fan knows, saving the day won’t be easy, as Jason finds himself forced to face the real world where death isn’t just a splash of fake blood on a camera lens.

Hiding from the past with her father and twin brother, Vayda knows the rules: never return to the town of her mother’s murder, and never work a Mind Game where someone might see.

No one can know the toll emotions take on Vayda, how emotion becomes energy in her hands, or how she can’t control the destruction she causes. But it’s not long before her powers can no longer be contained. The truth is dangerously close to being exposed, placing Vayda and her family at risk.
Until someone quiets the chaos inside her.

Unwanted. That’s all Ward Ravenscroft has ever been. To cope, he numbs the pain of rejection by denying himself emotions of any kind. Yet Vayda stirs something in him. He can’t explain the hold she has on him–inspiring him with both hope and fear. He claims not to scare easily, except he doesn’t know what her powers can do. Yet.

Just as Vadya and Ward draw closer, she finds the past isn’t so easily buried. And when it follows the Silvers to Black Orchard, it has murder in mind.

Predator-Cover

The hunt is on! Sixteen-year-old Bree Sunderland must inject herself with an untested version of her father’s gene therapy to become a werewolf in order to stop a corrupt group of mercenaries from creating a team of unstoppable lycanthrope soldiers.

When Bree went with her scientist father to Ireland, she thought it would be a vacation to study bog bodies. She never expected to fall in love with a mysterious young Irishman and certainly never expected to become the kind of monster her father said only existed in nightmares. Dr. Sunderland discovers that lycanthropy was not a supernatural curse but rather a genetic mutation. When they return home, her dad continues his research, but the military wants to turn that research into a bio weapons program and rogue soldiers want to steal the research to turn themselves into unstoppable killing machines.

Bree’s boyfriend Liam surprises her with a visit to the United States, but there are darker surprises in store for both of them. As evil forces hunt those she loves, Bree must become an even more dangerous hunter to save them all.

Bree will become the thing she hates, to protect those she loves!

‘Predator’ gives the werewolf legend a couple of new spins by introducing the Benandanti (an actual folkloric belief that certain families of Italy and Livonia were werewolves who fought against evil), as well as a modern scientific approach to mutation and the science of transgenics.

But are these the delusions of an immensely sick girl, or could Grace’s story actually be true?

Praefatio is Grace’s account of weeks on the run, falling in love and losing everything but her faith. When it’s sister against brother, light versus darkness, corrupt police officers, eager doctors and accusing journalists, against one girl with nothing but her word as proof: who do you believe?

 GUEST POST BY THE AUTHOR

Many people have asked me why I decided to write a novel about bullying. It’s a fair question. Bullying is a tough subject. It’s hard to read about, and I can assure you, it was just as hard to write. I never thought I would write about such a difficult subject, until about two years ago. I was flipping through the TV channels when I landed on the Dr. Phil show. His guest was a mother talking about the suicide of her daughter. Her daughter had been bullied in school and cyber bullied online so much that she felt like her only option was to commit suicide. Ashamed and embarrassed, she blamed herself.

My heart ached for this family. How awful, I thought, before immediately going online to research the statistics on teenage bullying. And the information I found was shocking. Every year, approximately 2 million adolescents attempt suicide. According to the Center for Disease Control, suicide is the third leading cause of death in young people between the ages of 10 and 24, resulting in approximately 4,600 deaths annually. There’s also a very strong link between bullying and suicide, with victims of bullying accounting for as much as half of suicide deaths.

I had absolutely no idea just how many kids were attempting suicide, or even thinking about it. I wanted to do something, and being a writer, the most powerful thing I could think of was to write a book about this epidemic in order to create awareness. Victims need to know that they are not alone. By talking about this subject, we empower each other. There’s hope for change when we refuse to allow these behaviors to continue. It’s hard enough for parents to lose children in accidents, but when children are committing suicide, it is even harder to deal with because it could have been prevented.

I think almost everyone can relate to being bullied; we have all dealt with it in some form or another. In my book, Santa;, you will get inside the head of June, a teenage girl who is assaulted and then bullied and cyber bullied to the point where she feels so isolated and alone and is convinced that she has no one on her side. It’s not an easy read, and it may make you very emotional, but considering the statistics I explained above, something needs to be done to create empathy for the victims of bullying. We are not doing enough for them, and we can certainly help much more.

AUTHOR MESSAGE

I was severely bullied as young as four years old. I don’t have a lot of memories from those years, but I remember the bullying like it was yesterday. I decided to write this book to raise awareness to the physical and psychological damage endured by adolescents who suffer from the effects of bullying. This epidemic is real, and something needs to be done to protect victims from feeling isolated.
