RAIN OF THE GHOSTS (PARANORMAL YA)
INTERVIEW WITH AUTHOR GREG WEISMAN
What initially got you interested in writing?
Spelling words. Seriously. My second grade teacher assigned us spelling words and our homework was to put each word in a sentence. I then put the sentences together to create a story for each assignment.
How did you decide to make the move into becoming an author of novels, after working in animation and comics?
I’ve always wanted to write a novel – and had started a few without finishing them. It was very intimidating. But with Rain of the Ghosts, I felt that I had such a good handle on the story, that I felt I had a good chance of going the distance.
What do you want readers to take away from reading your works?
Mostly, I just want them to be entertained. To feel they’ve come away from a great yarn. But the secondary goals are, of course, to say something about the human condition, to create memorable characters, to reveal something new that they’ve never seen before.
What do you find most rewarding about writing?
Not the money, that’s for sure. 😉
But I love connecting with characters on a level where they seem to be telling me what they’re going to do next.
What do you find most challenging about writing?
I’ve spent so many years in collaborative media, where I often literally had artists painting the worlds I created. Now, in writing a prose novel, I have to paint all those pictures on my own, with words.
What advice would you give to people wanting to enter the field?
Follow your passion. You’ll need it to get through.
You decided to take your novel RAIN OF THE GHOSTS and do a Kickstarter to release it in audio format. What prompted you to do that, and can you talk about the current status of the project?
The initial “prompt” was as simple as this: I wanted to hear it. But what I didn’t want was a typical audio book with one narrator reading both the narration and every character’s voice, male and female, old and young. So I conceived the idea of doing Rain of the Ghosts as an unabridged full-cast AudioPlay, complete with 20 amazing actors, a full musical score, sound effects, the works! We’ve recorded and paid for all the voice work. But we launched a Kickstarter on March 30th, 2015, in order to pay for the post-production. The campaign runs until April 29th, 2015, and we hope your readers will check it out at RainoftheGhosts.com.
UPDATE: The Kickstarter SUCCEEDED. Follow the progress of the audio play at RainOfTheGhosts.com.
